God Hates Slander and Gossip
God hates slander and gossip. He considers it murder and violence. Avoid people who always like speaking evil of others, whether that evil is true or not. Don’t entertain it because God will number you with them. And especially among believers, it is especially grievous to God because we are supposed to bless and speak life, and not curse. There is a difference between speaking against evil and sin and getting into personal attacks on people. Let’s be careful.
“Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?” James 4:11-12
“Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy; the one who has a haughty look and a proud heart, him I will not endure.” Psalm 101:1-5
Life and death is in the power of the tongue: slander kills.
Let us be careful how we use our tongues because we shall give account for every idle word on the day of judgment. Our words shall justify or condemn us.
“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36-37
God considers every harm done to anyone to be done to himself, whether that harm is done to an evil person or a good person. What we do to others we do to God. We cannot love God and hate our neighbor; it’s not possible. Hatred is not from God but from Satan. The first person ever to hate his brother was Cain, and the Bible says he belonged to Satan.
“This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did Cain slay him? Because his own deeds were evil, while those of his brother were righteous. So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.” 1 John 3:11-13
Out of the heart, the mouth speaks.
Whoever hates has not known God. Using words and speech to harm and curse others is hate and therefore murder. We are called to a higher standard as followers of Yeshua: to love as he loved the world. To be willing to lay down our lives for our enemies. When we hate others, we are placing ourselves in a position of being even greater than God, and the one who does that is Satan. Love is the proof that we know God.
“You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother’s son.” Psalm 50:20
“The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.” Proverbs 10:18
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry (clamor, shouting), and slander, along with every form of malice.” Ephesians 4:31
“A perverse man spreads dissension (strife), and a gossip (whisperer) divides close friends.” Proverbs 16:28
“These six things the Lord hates; yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
- A proud look,
- A lying tongue,
- Hands that shed innocent blood,
- A heart that devises wicked plans,
- Feet that are swift in running to evil,
- A false witness who speaks lies,
- And one who sows discord among brethren.” Proverbs 6:16-19
“But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness although they have denied its power; avoid such people as these.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5
