Lord, Teach Us to Number Our Days Before Death

The first thing that usually crosses my mind when anyone dies is whether they went to heaven or hell. And in actuality, at death, for the deceased, that’s what matters. Not all the accolades and memories they have left on earth. God alone is the final judge, and the basis of his judgment is the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no bypassing Jesus, and no one can enter heaven without submission and obedience to him.

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

May we be wise and secure our eternal life before it’s too late.

“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

“For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” James 4:14

It is better to enter a house of mourning than a house of feasting.

Death is a sobering time. It is an opportunity for the living, not for the dead. The dead are gone, and all the flashy funerals will not help them where they are, be it heaven or hell, but funerals and death itself are a great opportunity God gives the living to think about their souls. Yet many never do that. Many even take the chance in funerals and death to engage in more wickedness, like alcohol, revelry, or idolatrous practices, rather than getting right with God. Humans are strange!

“It is better to enter a house of mourning than a house of feasting, since death is the end of every man, and the living should take this to heart.” Ecclesiastes 7:2

“He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11

The death of the righteous is pleasing to God and is a great homegoing! But the death of the wicked is terrible. God does not delight in the death of the wicked but desires all to repent.

May God have mercy on the living today!

“Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord GOD, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?” Ezekiel 18:23

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Psalm 116:15

Have you given your life to Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior? He loves us so much that he, our creator, left heaven and came to earth, dying for us on the cross, taking our sins upon him so that we may be forgiven and receive his righteousness. He conquered death by rising from the dead and made a way for us who were dead in sin to be reconciled back to the Father (God). What’s more, he has prepared a wonderful home for us in heaven, where those who love him and obey him will spend eternity with him. Learn more here about how to be born again and have eternal life after this brief life on earth.
