We Have a Better Country Awaiting Us
Beloved, it is human nature to become dull of hearing when we hear something over and over again, but we must always remember that Jesus promised to return, and he will, and he shall come as a thief in the night when we least expect him. Let us not grow faint or familiar with this world. Let us live as those who have their luggage packed and ready to go. Travel light. Leave this world to those who want it. We as believers are not of this world. We are pilgrims and sojourners here just as the children of Israel were in Egypt.
When the children of Israel left Egypt, they were excited to enter the promised land, but when they faced challenges in the wilderness, the majority gave up and forgot God’s promise and inheritance laid up for them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. They were unable to hold on to the heavenly vision; they stopped seeing it; it became a dream. God was not pleased with that generation and their lack of faith, and they perished in the wilderness. Their journey is symbolic of ours. Many even now will set off for the promised land, but not all will enter for the same reasons.
May we not lose sight of what God has prepared for us. The best of this life can never prepare us for the inheritance laid up for us in heaven. We are in a race, one beset by great opposition from a great enemy who does not want us to inherit what he lost. We must hold on to what we have and keep our eyes on the prize before us. If the prize is ever before us, we will have the motivation to endure and deny ourselves. But if we are short-sighted, we will be waylaid along the way by empty distractions and deceptions.
May the Lord Jesus help us all to finish strong in his mighty name. He is able to keep us from falling if we cling to him and abide in him.
“For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” Hebrews 11:10
“So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.” Acts 26:19
“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had the opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one; wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he hath prepared for them a city.” Hebrews 11:13-16
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:1-4
“And now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified.” Acts 20:32
