The Power of Desperation in Being Free From Sin
There is a level of desperation that’s needed to overcome besetting sin. Until sin is hated, it cannot be overcome. Once the hatred of sin becomes greater than the pleasure it seems to offer, freedom becomes easier to attain. If we still love our sin, even God cannot deliver us from it because we are not willing.
This is even psychologically proven in the treatment of alcoholism and addictions. Usually, people only change when they hit rock bottom. That’s usually the wake-up call they need to hate the addiction. Desperation seems to set in when men come to the end of themselves.
Jesus asked a blind man, “What do you want me to do for you? (Mark 10:51). He did not assume that the man wanted to see; he asked. Many people do not want freedom; they delight in self-pity and excuses. Jesus did not force healing and salvation on people. They had to be willing.
Many times he told people, “Your faith has made you well/whole”, and likewise similar words. In these cases, the desperation of the people is evidenced by the actions they took. Examples include the woman with the issue of blood (Matthew 9:22), the leper (Luke 17:19), the blind beggar (Luke 18:42), the centurion (Matthew 8:13), and the Canaanite woman with a demon-tormented daughter (Matthew 15:28).
In Nazareth, his hometown, Jesus could not do many miracles because they had no faith. The people of Nazareth allowed their familiarity with Jesus to despise his ability to heal them.
Desperation moves the heart of God
When we have had enough of sin, reached our end, and cry out to Jesus, usually in most cases, the power of sin is broken instantly. John Flavel said, “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity“.
God is moved when we realize we cannot do anything without him and throw ourselves fully at his mercy. The proud cannot receive anything from God. He responds to the humble and contrite heart.
The person who has had enough of sin does not argue with what he needs to do to be free. He does not hide his sins anymore or make excuses for them. He is willing to do whatever it takes. That is why such a person usually receives an answer faster. As long as we have an excuse or tolerance for sin, we remain in its power. The Bible is replete with examples of people who reached this place of desperation. They knew only God could help them, and they cried out for dear life. Usually, God responded speedily.
We must see sin for what it is, an enemy sent to destroy our lives and also our souls for all eternity. When we truly see this and accept it, we will be willing to run to the Lord Jesus, who paid the price for our sins, for salvation. Only he can deliver permanently. He came to set the captives free.
Call on the savior!
Are you beset by sins and bondages? Realize you cannot help or save yourself. The arm of flesh cannot help you. Cry out to the one who can break the power of sin and bondage. Jesus alone is able!
“And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the remnant whom the LORD calls.” Joel 2:32
“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8
