God Is Not Just Love. He Is Multi-Faceted

God is not a big grandfather in the sky who is all love and nothing else. That is a false concept that, sadly, even most believers have. The idea that God is just so loving that he accepts them as they are and can never judge them. God has revealed himself in his Word, the Bible. We cannot accept an idea about God based on our own feelings about what he should be like or our own human opinions. The human heart is wicked, and we like to imagine God is like us. That he is just so in love with us that even if we sin, we will go guiltless. The only faithful image of God is that in his Word.

From Genesis to Revelation, God has revealed his character perfectly. He is not just love. In fact, the Bible talks about God being HOLY almost twice as much as him being love. It also talks about God being JUST and RIGHTEOUS more than him being love. When we major on one characteristic of God (the one we like most) more than others, then we have a false god.

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.” Isaiah 6:1-3

God’s love cannot contradict his holiness

God’s major characteristic is his holiness. His holiness is what undergirds every other characteristic of his. Holiness means perfection. Because God is holy, he cannot love at the expense of his holiness or any of his other qualities, like justice and righteousness. And this is why Jesus had to die as justice for sin. God gave his own son, whom he loved more than anything (because he obeyed him perfectly), and sacrificed him for us to free us from the penalty of sin. This was to satisfy his divine justice that cannot leave sin unpunished. But this does not mean we continue sinning, as that is mocking God’s sacrifice. Jesus’ death not only justified us, but it also made provision for our sanctification and eventually glorification. He sanctifies us through his Spirit living inside of us.

“But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning to be saved by the SANCTIFICATION OF THE SPIRIT and by FAITH IN THE TRUTH.” 2 Thessalonians 3:13

A god who will allow you into heaven while you disobey and rebel against him is a false god. It is dangerous to have a false image of God because it places you in danger. If one thinks God cannot judge them, then it means they will never repent of sin and will continue in sin, thinking God loves them unconditionally. The truth is that God does not love us unconditionally. There are conditions to our covenant with him. We must remain in His son and obey Him to be accepted by Him.

Here is God’s own revelation of his nature to Moses:

“Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.” Exodus 34:6-7

Have you given your life to Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior? He loves us so much that he, our creator, left heaven and came to earth, dying for us on the cross, taking our sins upon him so that we may be forgiven and receive his righteousness. He conquered death by rising from the dead and made a way for us who were dead in sin to be reconciled back to the Father (God). What’s more, he has prepared a wonderful home for us in heaven, where those who love him and obey him will spend eternity with him. Learn more here about how to be born again and have eternal life after this brief life on earth.
