“I Sought for a Man Among Them.”

God is not an impersonal but a personal God. He is a person and has made us in His image to reflect His glorious attributes. He has a mind, a will, desires, and feelings, but his are absolutely perfect. God is not just some remote, removed figure in the sky who has nothing to do with us. He is personally acquainted with every man he has created.

“God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God.” Psalm 53:2

“For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all his steps.” Job 34:21

“Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord, “and not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, so I shall not see him?” says the Lord; “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:23-24

God is always seeking a man.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God is always seeking a person to reveal Himself to, share His heart with, and be close to. It is why he created Adam. He chose individuals to make covenants with. He scanned the earth and chose men who loved him and feared him that he could confide in and share his purposes with. We see this with Abraham, David, Noah, Job, Moses, Elijah, Daniel, and so forth.

“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:8-9

“He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’” Acts 13:22

“Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” Genesis 6:5-8

“But you, Israel, are My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the descendants of Abraham My friend.” Isaiah 41:8

God has preferences among men.

While God does not show partiality, he does honor some men more than others. He has preferences. He spoke well of these great men, bragging about them and his friendship and love for them. Yet with other men, he expressed anger, hurt, disappointment, and even wrath (for example, King Ahab, King Saul, Pharaoh, etc.).

“Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out My fury on it in blood, and cut off from it man and beast, even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they would deliver neither son nor daughter; they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.” Ezekiel 14:19-20

“Then the LORD said to Satan, ‘Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?’” Job 1:8

The man who honors God, God will honor him.

God is a person, a being. He is familiar with all our ways, he perceives our thoughts afar off, and he knows our secret motives and intentions. He scans the earth and sees and understands all men. God still seeks a man. He still desires a relationship with us. He still wants to be honored as a father and honors those who honor him. God never changes.

“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am the Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My reverence? Says the LORD of hosts to you priests who despise My name. Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?” Malachi 1:6

“Therefore, the LORD God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the LORD says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.” 1 Samuel 2:30

“Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy.” Psalm 33:18

We can be that man if we pay the price.

We can be as close to him as we choose to be. It is we who keep him afar off, but God desires to be close to all of us. He delights in his children, but our sins, self-will, and idols keep us from him, and he from us. Those who seek him, find him. Those who honor him, he honors. And those who hate him, he will reject and keep from his presence forever. He is just. He is faithful.

“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9

“Then Peter opened his mouth and said, ‘Children, in truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.” Acts 10:34-35

“So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.” Ezekiel 22:30
