The Sin Not Repented of Is Not Forgiven

The sin that is not confessed and repented of is not forgiven

The passage of time does not erase sin; God does not forget. He only forgets what He forgives, and He only forgives what is acknowledged, confessed, and repented of. As Christians, we should be careful not to let sin fester without confession, because if this becomes a habit, our hearts will become hardened, and we will be under God’s judgment. Sin should be repented of immediately after it is committed or remembered. This sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and his convictions will help us grow in sanctification. And every night we should review our day and confess our sins, make peace with those we may have offended, and sleep with a clear conscience, “because you do not know when the master of the house will return—whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or in the morning (Mark 13:35).”

We should not presume on God’s grace and say he understands sin, or that too much time has gone by, and so think we don’t need to confess. God records everything. Our sins are only forgiven when we bring them before his throne for the blood of Jesus to wash.

“Reconcile quickly with your adversary while you are still on the way to court. Otherwise, he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” Matthew 5:25-26

“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” Proverbs 28:13

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

“We have a strange illusion that mere time cancels sin. I have heard others, and I have heard myself, recounting cruelties and falsehoods committed in boyhood as if they were no concern of the present speaker’s, and even with laughter. But mere time does nothing either to the fact or to the guilt of a sin. The guilt is washed out not by time but by repentance and the blood of Christ: if we have repented these early sins we should remember the price of our forgiveness and be humble.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain

Have you given your life to Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior? He loves us so much that he, our creator, left heaven and came to earth, died for us on the cross, taking our sins upon him so that we may be forgiven and receive his righteousness. He conquered death by rising from the dead and made a way for us who were dead in sin to be reconciled back to the Father (God). What’s more, he has prepared a wonderful home for us in Heaven, where those who love him and obey him will spend eternity with him.
