God’s Mercy in Discipline and Judgment
God’s discipline and even judgment are a form of mercy. The human heart is evil. For many of us, unless we face the judgment, discipline, and affliction of God, we will not humble ourselves or slow down enough to reflect on our lives and the existence and reality of God and the coming judgment. Many of us turned to God because we faced either the grave consequences of sin or the discipline and judgment of God for our sins. And even in this, this is the MERCY of God in operation.
God is so merciful that he will even allow affliction, so we turn to him. God is willing to do anything to get our attention. And in many cases, it has worked. Many have turned to God when they reached the end of themselves. If God were not long-suffering or merciful, we would all have perished long ago because we offend him so much. It sometimes takes judgment to humble us. The Bible is filled with such examples, not only for individuals but also for nations.
Many of us would say with David, “It was good for me to be afflicted, that I might learn Your statutes.” Psalm 119:70
“My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD, and do not loathe His rebuke; / for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, as does a father the son in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:11-12
“No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11
In God’s great sovereignty, all our suffering and even the consequences of sin have in them the ability to draw us to him. But we have to respond in humility, otherwise, all we have is worldly sorrow, which produces death.
