Who Will Go to the Lake of Fire?

Who does the Bible say will end up in the lake of fire for eternity? This is not a pretty subject to talk about or think about, but unfortunately, it is a reality from which we cannot escape. The Bible closes in Revelation 22, and the final chapters of this prophetic book reveal to us the end of the earth and the fate of us all after the final judgment and the beginning of the age of eternity. Quite sobering.

Sadly, as revealed throughout scripture, some will not get to spend eternity with God but instead will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire because they rejected God. I saw this statement from someone on Quora who said it well: “In the end, there will be two places: with God and without God.”

Before I list the categories, it is good to know that the lake of fire was originally made only for Satan and his angels who rebelled against God. Jesus made this clear in Matthew 25:41: Their fate is sealed, and they know it. But for humans, a way of being reconciled to God was provided by God so that no human being needs to end up sharing Satan’s fate, but sadly, billions will simply because of rebellion. A popular song had the title “I Did It My Way.” With God, we get to do it our way, but there are consequences for every choice we make.

Below is a list of those who will spend eternity in the lake of fire:

1. The beast (Antichrist) and the false prophet

These will deceive the world to receive the mark of the beast and worship the image of the beast (which I suspect to be connected to AI) during the final half of the tribulation period.

These are the first ones to be thrown into the lake of fire and will be thrown in alive by Jesus at his 2nd coming before his 1,000-year reign on earth from Jerusalem. Revelation 19:20

“Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.” Revelation 19:20

2. Satan and his angels

Satan will be cast into the lake of fire after the 1,000-year reign of Christ. He and his vast army will make one final attempt to overthrow Jesus in Jerusalem, and God will send fire from heaven to devour them. Satan, who has deceived the world for thousands of years since Adam, will be thrown into the lake of fire forever. Revelation 20:10

“The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” Revelation 20:10

Jesus also mentioned that the devil’s angels who rebelled with him would also be cast into the lake of fire.

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Matthew 25:41

3. Death and hell

Death and hell will be cast into the lake of fire after they deliver all the dead that were IN them to stand before God in the final great white throne judgment.

This means that Death is not an event; it is an actual being or power. What kind I don’t know, but the Bible tells us that there are angelic principalities, powers, rulers, and authorities that rule over this world and the second heavens.

Death swallows up the souls of men who don’t belong to God. Those who belong to Jesus die physically, but their souls are taken by God, and death cannot hold them. (“Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?” 1 Corinthians 15:55)

Hell is also a real living being or power. What sort, I also can’t say, but many souls end up in hell after death to await the final judgment, which will take place after the 1,000-year reign of Christ. This will be the 2nd resurrection (the resurrection of sinners).

“Therefore hell has enlarged itself and opened its mouth beyond measure; their glory and their multitude and their pomp, and he who is jubilant, shall descend into it.” Isaiah 5:15

Death and Hell will be cast into the lake of fire as well on the final judgment. Revelation 20:13-14

“The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” Revelation 20:13-14

4. Human unbelievers/sinners/rebellious

This is all human beings who have ever lived but rejected the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for their sins and chose to be separated from God.

This category of people is referred to in the Bible as sinners, children of wrath, sons of disobedience, or unbelievers. Because they rejected the only way provided by God to be reconciled to him as a Father, their names were not written in the Book of Life, and they too will sadly spend eternity in the lake of fire with Satan, fallen angels, and his agents. Revelation 20:11-15

“Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things that were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:11-15

Revelation 21 gives a more detailed description of these unrepentant sinners who will end up in the Lake of Fire:

“But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Matthew 25:41

God loves us and has made a way for us to be reconciled to him. We need only believe

God has made provision for all of us not to end up in that terrible place for all eternity. By his great love and mercy, he paid the price for our sins by giving his own Son to make atonement for the sins of humanity.

He lovingly gives us that choice to be reconciled to him and reclaim what was lost when our first parents sinned and we got corrupted by sin or not. If we accept his gift of love, we get to spend eternity with our Father, and we are set free from bondage and slavery to sin, which is the source of all our problems.

God has made everything possible for us through his son, and it is all free of charge.

This is what one of the concluding verses in the Bible says in conclusion: “And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17

Jesus calls out freely to us, but he cannot force anyone to love him and accept his gift of himself for salvation. Those who choose the path of rebellion towards their creator and follow their own way, as Satan did, choose eternal separation from a holy God in the lake of fire. Satan’s fate is sealed, but humanity’s isn’t; yours isn’t. Jesus died for man. God is extending his hand out every day and moment until we exit this world.

Today, if you hear his voice tugging at your heart, do not harden your heart or postpone the decision. NOW is the day of salvation. The father waits to be reconciled to you.

“Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:15

There is no single soul that goes to hell without God doing all he can to reach that soul. We cannot blame him for the fate of our souls because he has provided a door to enter, his son Jesus Christ.
