Return Backsliders! Jesus is Calling You!
The Lord Jesus calls all backsliders to return to him and the covenant of salvation they had with him while there is still time. He says, “Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings (Jeremiah 3:22).”
The Lord Jesus is coming back soon and calling all his children to come back to him. It is not his will for any to perish, and especially not those who once walked with him. The torments of hell will be worse for those who knew the truth and left it.
“For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.” Hebrews 10:26-27
Backsliders, Jesus still loves you. He will heal your backsliding if you come back unto him.
“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.” Jeremiah 3:22
For many years, I was backslidden. I was under the judgment of God and the relentless attacks of the enemy to take me to hell. But the Lord Jesus was merciful unto me. He opened my eyes before it was too late. My testimony is evidence that the Lord’s words are true, he will heal your backslidings if you turn back to him. It is not too late backsliders. As long as you are alive, you still have a chance to return to him.
The Lord is married to the backsliders
“Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion.” Jeremiah 3:14
When we turn to the Lord Jesus in salvation, we become one with him. “But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him (1 Corinthians 6:17)”. In this union we become his bride and are betrothed to him. It is a spiritual marriage covenant and the Lord takes it seriously. This is why Apostle Paul told the Corinthian believers when they were going astray, “I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2 ).“
In the book of Ephesians chapter 5, Paul compared the relationship between a man and his wife, to that of Christ and his church. Revelation 19:7 talks about the wedding of Jesus Christ and his holy bride (believers who stay devoted to him until he returns).
Backsliding is adultery
When a born-again believer backslides, they have effectually committed adultery and cheated on the Lord Jesus. It is a grave sin. Apostle James says in James 4:4, “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?” When we go back to the world, we have broken our covenant with Jesus and taken on another lover. It breaks his heart.
But because Jesus does not go back on his love and covenant with us, he still stretches out his hand to his adulterous wife willing to forgive her. The book of Hosea is a perfect demonstration of this. God asked the Prophet Hosea to marry an adulterous wife to demonstrate God’s relationship with wayward Israel in the life of the prophet. God says in Hosea 14:4 concerning adulterous Israel, “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.”
If we repent and turn back to Jesus at any time in our backsliding, he will forgive us. He is a faithful husband. No adulterers shall inherit the kingdom of heaven.
The problem is that many Christians do not think that spiritual adultery is as real as physical sexual adultery but it is all the same. At salvation, we were united with Christ. To violate this separates us from him forever.
The danger of dying as a backslider
The devil does not want you to turn back to Jesus. Your backsliding is the will of Satan. He wants you for himself, that you may spend eternity in hell with him as his bride. He will do everything it takes to keep you from turning back to Jesus. You need to know that. There is a literal war over your soul and Satan is not out for your good. The Backslider is in grave danger. Satan knows that God hates adultery and will try to make you die in that state.
“Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers… will inherit the kingdom of God” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
The choice is yours: who will you serve?
As long as you turn back to Jesus he will forgive you and redeem you.
“Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion.” Jeremiah 3:14
You get to choose. If you reject Jesus and die in adultery, then you will be separated from him forever. As a result, you will go where your lover, the devil, whom you have chosen, will—to hell. Adultery breaks a marriage covenant according to scripture. It was the only reason Jesus gave that allowed for divorce. However, as long as the husband and wife are alive, reconciliation is still possible. But if an adulterer dies in that state, then they die separated from their husband.
It is not possible to have two husbands according to scripture. This is a sin. We must choose. Jesus or the devil. If we choose Jesus, acknowledge what we have done, repent, and ask him for forgiveness, he will. But we have to devote ourselves to him thereafter as a faithful bride.
I will love you freely; I will heal your backslidings
“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.” Hosea 14:4
“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.” Jeremiah 3:22
Jesus is gracious. He is merciful and forgiving. He delights in showing mercy. If his wayward bride returns to him again, he promises to forgive and heal. He will love you FREELY. What amazing grace. However, if the backslider rejects him and chooses their other lovers, they will perish. And this will be their own free will choice, not the Lords. Choose him today. Tell him, “Behold I come unto you, for you are the Lord my God.”
The wedding of the lamb is near
Jesus is coming back soon just as he promised! The wedding of the lamb mentioned in Revelation 19 is near. It is not too late for you backslider to renew your covenant with the Lord and be his bride on that day. It takes only humble and sincere repentance and a renewal of your vows to the Lord.
“Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” Revelation 19:7-8
“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” Revelation 2:4-5
