Two Roads to Eternity – Which Will You Take?
Jesus taught that there are only two roads to eternity and two destinations. Do you know which road you’re on and where you’re headed? There is no single human decision as important as this one because it determines the fate of one’s soul for all eternity.
The Two Roads
Jesus in Matthew 7:13-14, talks about the two roads, called one the narrow road and the other, the wide road. Let us look at that passage of scripture from 3 different bible translations below:
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” King James Version
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” English Standard Version
“You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.” New Living Translation
The wide Road
Jesus mentioned that the wide road has a wide gate and many enter through it. This road is described as broad, easy, and also as a highway. It is very easy to picture this road. The road to hell is the most popular because it has fewer requirements to follow. It is easy and is a highway filled with people. Jesus said that many enter through that way and choose it.
Why do many choose it? Because it is the path of doing what you wish, following your whims and desires and doing what everyone else is doing. It is the highway of sin and therefore it costs nothing to follow this road. You only need to keep doing what you are doing. Whenever you see a path that the majority is following, it is usually the wrong path. Jesus said “If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.” (Matthew 15:14)
The Narrow Road
By contrast, the narrow road is described as having a narrow or small gate. This road is described as narrow, hard, and difficult. Picturing this road, it doesn’t seem very attractive. It is therefore no wonder that Jesus said that few find it. Jesus also seems to imply that it is hidden hence the need to find it.
Why is this road difficult to find and hard to follow? One reason is that it is a road that has an exclusive gate. You cannot enter into this road by any gate. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6).” With this singular statement, Jesus narrowed the way to life tremendously. He declared himself to be the only way. Jesus is that narrow road to life and heaven.
Another reason that this road is difficult is that it is a road of self-denial. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Matthew 16:24).” This is completely different from the road or highway to hell where the followers therein do what they wish.
Jesus asks those who choose to follow him to deny themselves and take up their crosses just as he took up his. We are to follow HIM and not ourselves. This is not easy, as it requires dying to our former lives of sin and living for God in righteousness. It is difficult because it is much easier to live in sin.
Which of the Two Roads Will You Choose Today
Which road will you follow today? The way to life is one, it is choosing to be a follower of Jesus. He is the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to his father but by him. The decision is simply whether you will accept God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Those who believe in Jesus turn from death to life. They move from the wide road to destruction to the narrow road of life. Moses told the children of Israel, “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live (Deuteronomy 30:19).”
Choose life today! Accept that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, repent of your sins, and receive him as your Lord and Savior. If you do that you will be on the narrow road to eternal life!

Have you given your life to Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior? He loves us so much that he, our creator, left heaven and came to earth, died for us on the cross taking our sins upon him so that we may be forgiven and receive his righteousness. He conquered death by rising from the dead and made a way for us who were dead in sin to be reconciled back to the Father (God).
